Back to Main MenuCelebrationsFraud PreventionManage Your AdPlace an AdView full sizeMarvin Fong, The Plain DealerJunior Jordan Hall (7, returning a kickoff against Arkansas in last January's Sugar Bowl) has the most game experience among the OSU running backs eligible to start the season, but Hall's special teams value make limit his time in the offensive backfield.COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State must run. Luke Fickell said as much again over the weekend. A new quarterback, young receivers and talent among the top five offensive linemen means the Buckeyes have to turn and hand it off."Right now knowing that we don't have a stable quarterback, they're kind of depending on the running game and all our backs," sophomore Jaamal Berry said. "Hopefully we're going to carry the team and carry the offense."That's the theory. What's the execution? Even with No. 1 running back Dan Herron suspended for five games, the Buckeyes have four legitimate options in smaller backs Berry and junior Jordan Hall and bigger backs sophomore Carlos Hyde and freshman Rod Smith. In the parlance of former coach Jim Tressel, the Buckeyes once again should be looking for a pair and a spare. That's why the decisions in the backfield coming into focus this week are so crucial."Jaamal and I talk about how every time we get the ball, we want to make a play," Hall said. "You treat every carry like it's your last carry."Two of the backs should play a major role in the offense during the first five games, a third may get a look and the fourth won't do much more than watch. Over the last 10 seasons of Ohio State football, the Buckeyes' top back averaged 212 carries a season, the No. 2 back had 103 and the third had 45."You can use three," running backs coach Dick Tressel said, ruling out four backs getting into a rotation. "There's a role for one in certain situations, and then a pair that works together or takes turns or whatever. That's how we see it playing out."The most interesting case may belong to the back who currently seems the odd man out. Smith was a star of bowl practice last December while taking a redshirt season, and he came into 2011 looking like the best package of size and speed. While he had some reps with the first team offense in Saturday's scrimmage, Smith may be last in the pecking order, for now."He still has a little bit of an unknown there that hasn't allowed him to completely open the valve," Tressel said. "I don't think he's completely opened the valve and played recklessly yet, because he wants to do the right thing. But he's pretty close."For now, the others may be in the lead.Hall is all over the place, a running back plus more. He'll line up at tailback with the first team offense in practice, then go work with the receivers during individual drills. People keep saying things like this about Terrelle Pryor's former high school teammate: "Jordan Hall is a really, really, really good football player," said offensive coordinator Jim Bollman. "A really good football player."View full sizeTerry Gilliam, Associated PressWith Dan Herron (1, left) out for the first five games of the season, Jaamal Berry (4) and Carlos Hyde (34) figure to see time on the field for the Buckeyes. But does that make him the No. 1 tailback? Maybe not. Hall should be used in the passing game as well and is the Buckeyes' top kick and punt returner."He'll get four of his carries a game probably returning kicks," Tressel said.Somehow, Hall may be too valuable to be the No. 1 back, if that makes any sense. So Berry and Hyde should get looks, but Berry has to stay healthy. His explosiveness isn't in doubt. But he battled hamstring injuries while redshirting as a freshman and was out last week, including for the jersey scrimmage, with a hamstring issue. He's expected back this week, but Berry has to make sure his hamstring issue doesn't linger in order to claim his spot."I've battled these injuries," Berry said. "Once I get my time on the field I'll show everybody what I'm about." The University of Westminster has produced a fleet of Olympic athletes over the years who have competed for the University and its predecessors, including Olympians such as Arthur Wint, who ran for Jamaica and received a gold and silver; Johnny Wright, a medal weight boxer who won silver; David Ricketts, who achieved bronze as part of the British 4,000m pursuit team and Dame Mary Glen Haig, who was the only British finalist in the women's fencing in 1948. Alan Pascoe MBE, a member of the Polytechnic Harriers athletics club, won silver in the 4 x 400m relay at the 1972 Games in Munich and more recently, as Vice Chairman to Lord Coe, he played a key role in the successful British bid to host this year's Games. On show will be information and pictures of the route for the 1908 marathon, which was organised by the Polytechnic Harriers and was the first to be run at the now standard distance of 26 miles and 385 yards, on a course designed by Jack Andrew, the official who measured the 1908 course. Members of the Polytechnic Harriers won medals for Great Britain at every Olympics between 1908 and 1952, with the exception of the 1936 Berlin Games. The 1948 Olympics, the so called austerity games, gave particular attention to the cycling pursuit team and David Ricketts, a Regent Street Polytechnic member who took home a bronze medal. Images will also be available of the Polytechnic Boxing Club which produced several Olympic champions such as Charlie Morris who won silver in the featherweights and Frank Parks who achieved bronze in the heavyweight category at the 1908 Games. In 1900, women were allowed to compete in certain sports for the first time. Following this, the first Women's only Olympiad was organised in Monaco in 1921 and a number of members from the Polytechnic's Ladies Athletics Club participated in the landmark event. The exhibition includes a number of artefacts and photographs of the team at the event. Geoff Petts, Vice Chancellor at the University of Westminster said: "The University of Westminster has a longstanding history of supporting the Olympic Games and this year is no exception. We look forward to once again being able to celebrate the achievements of our students and academia members of the University, many of who have had the chance to play an important part in the implementation of the Games in our home city. The exhibition provides a great opportunity for the University and the local community to view some unique artefacts and remember the role that London has played in so many Olympic Games." The exhibition is being held at the Old Cinema at the University's headquarters at 309 Regent Street and will run until 10 September, 2012. Admission is free and is open to the public on Monday Saturday, 10am 6pm. With children this young, it probably doesn't make sense to try using a chart system that tracks your child's progress. At this age, kids don't have a good enough understanding of time and delayed gratification to benefit from having their successes measured graphically. Avoid using rewards to extract a promise from your child that needs to be kept far in the future, meaning more than two minutes from now. Lines such as "If we stop at the toy store on the way home to get you that game, you have to promise to use the toilet this afternoon" or "If I let you wear your party dress without a diaper, you have to promise me you won't have any accidents all day" probably won't do much good. It's useless to ask a young child to stick to a promise for the future in exchange for something she wants in the moment. A 2 year old can understand only the feelings, wants, and desires she is experiencing now. She can promise a parent anything, but at this age she shouldn't be expected to keep a promise, no matter what she says. Don't punish your young child for saying she'll do something later and then not following through. If you have any concerns about your own health or the health of your child, you should always consult with a physician or other healthcare professional. Air Jordan 14 Low Light Graphite MILWAUKEE Mat Latos' first appearance of the season for Cincinnati went as well as could be expected in every way except the final score. Latos threw 87 pitches over six shutout innings in his season debut, giving up two hits while striking out four in the Reds' 4 2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. Hoover yielding Ryan Braun's game winning two run home run in the eighth inning. Latos retired the first four hitters he faced before giving up a single to Aramis Ramirez. He then retired 13 hitters in a row before Scooter Gennett outlasted him in a long at bat with two outs in the sixth inning. Gennett, who several times just got a piece of the ball to stay alive, hit the 13th pitch into left field for a double. Braun then hit a drive to the centre field wall that Billy Hamilton caught, prompting Latos to thrust his fist in the air. Latos said it was emotional to be back on the mound. "It has been a struggle to get where I was today," he said. "It is definitely good. The outcome kind of sucks, but that is baseball. They are in first place for a reason. You just got to come back strong tomorrow." Reds manager Bryan Price said Latos did his job very well. "I don't regret taking him out," he said. "I regret the result, the fact that we lost the game. He did exactly what we had hoped he would do." Price said the Reds have to bounce back and try to win the series on Sunday. "You have to be resilient in this game," he said. "There are a lot of guys that are upset, disappointed, frustrated by the game. We come back tomorrow and we got to come and play a good game." With one out in the eighth inning, Gennett ended up with a double after blooping a ball to centre that Hamilton got his glove on but couldn't hold. Braun then drove the first pitch from reliever Hoover (1 5) over the right field fence for his 10th homer of the season. Hoover said he was trying to get ahead on Braun. "I kind of left it up a little bit," he said. "I tip my hat to him. He put a good swing on it." Braun has been battling a hitting slump and said he was looking for a fastball from Hoover. "We know a lot about Hoover and know he likes to throw the fastball," Braun said. "This is definitely encouraging and hopefully I can build off that and get going." Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his 21st save in 23 opportunities. Will Smith (1 0) got the win despite giving up a game tying home run to Hamilton in the eighth inning. Another encouraging sign for the Brewers was the performance of starter Yovani Gallardo, who went seven innings, allowing one run on six hits and two walks while striking out eight. The Reds grabbed a 1 0 lead in the first inning on Brandon Phillips' RBI single. The Brewers wasted no time in taking the lead after Latos left the game. Logan Ondrusek walked Jonathan Lucroy to start the seventh inning and Carlos Gomez lined a single. Both runners advanced on Ramirez's fly out and Lucroy scored on Khris Davis' groundout. Rickie Weeks then singled to left to give the Brewers a 2 1 lead. Hamilton tied the score in the bottom of the inning with his third home run of the season. NOTES: To make room for Latos on the roster, the Reds put LHP Sean Marshall on the 15 day disabled list with a strained right shoulder. . The Brewers signed the team's top three draft picks: LHP Kodi Medeiros, SS Jacob Gatewood and OF Monte Harrison. All three were at Miller Park Saturday and took batting practice before the game. . The Brewers will start RHP Marco Estrada (5 3) in Sunday's series finale against the Reds' Mike Leake (3 6).
