Sakran admitted "huffing" chemical fumes moments before the Oct. 5 crash.Syracuse, NY A town of Clay man was sentenced today to 2 1/3 to seven years in state prison for the death of a pedestrian in a hit run crash." I deserve everything I'm going to go through and I'm truly sorry," Aaron Sakran told Onondaga County Judge Anthony Aloi.Aloi said leaving the scene of a crash after striking a pedestrian is one of the "most selfish, cold blooded and cowardly acts."Sakran, 20, of 4225 Inverrary Drive, pleaded guilty Dec. 19 to a single felony count of second degree manslaughter in the death of Joseph Ozimek III.Sakran admitted he was inhaling "difluoroethane" a process known as "huffing" in which a person gets high from chemical fumes moments before he ran down Ozimek.Ozimek, 19, of Brompton Lane, Clay, was walking home from his job at a nearby McDonald's restaurant when he was run down along the side of Oswego Road near Willowbrook Drive shortly after midnight Oct. 5. by a passenger on a passing bus.Assistant District Attorney James Daley today said the medical evidence indicated Ozimek suffered a severe head injury and died within minutes of the crash."Fortunately, he died very quickly. He passed away very quickly," the prosecutor noted.Members of Ozimek's family were in court for today's sentencing. But while they submitted a victim impact statement to the probation department, they chose not to addrss Aloi in open court.They also opted not to talk to reporters as they left court after Sakran's sentencing.Daley said the family had accepted the sentencing deal struck when Sakran pleaded guilty last month. But he noted no amount of jail time for Sakran was going to give the Ozimek family closure over the death of their loved one.That's something Aloi noted in court as well."No amount of remorse is going to bring Joseph Ozimek back to his family," the judge told Sakran.The judge sharply questioned how someone could do what Sakran did. Aloi asked how a motorist could strike a pedestrian and then drive off, leaving the victim to die.Aloi asked if someone just goes home and goes to bed after doing that.Despite fear or concern about the consequences of causing such a crash, a motorist should stop, get out of his or her vehicle and verify what was struck by the vehicle, the judge lectured Sakran.
