Its current lineup includes trumpeter Randy Brecker, Israeli clarinetist saxophonist Anat Cohen, saxophonist Lew Tabackin, guitarist Howard Alden, bassist Jay Leonhart and drummer Clarence Penn. "I don't know whether this will be my last appearance because I find it very difficult," said the 88 year old Wein. "I always wondered what I'm going to do in my old age. I'm in my old age. . Keeping up with these younger musicians who know more about music is not easy, but I've had a good run." Wein began his career as a jazz pianist, but after hearing Art Tatum he realized he could never match that virtuosity. Instead, he found his true calling as a producer and opened his Storyville club in Boston in 1951. But Wein never gave up being a jazz pianist. His Storyville All Stars morphed into the Newport All Stars when Wein created the world's first outdoor jazz festival in the tony Rhode Island seaside resort in 1954. Wein later brought in a younger generation of swing style musicians such as tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton, trumpeter Warren Vache, Jr. and guitarist Alden. In recent years, the band's lineup has covered a generation gap spanning more than half a century with up and coming jazz stars such as Cohen and bassist singer Esperanza Spalding playing alongside veterans such as drummer Jimmy Cobb, the last surviving musician from Miles Davis' 1959 "Kind of Blue" album. "I've had the best of both worlds," Wein said of his dual roles as performer and producer. "I'm a good leader and know how to present my musicians. When they're called All Stars, I make them All Stars." Wein says that over the past five years he's changed his approach, even getting involved a little bit with more modern modal playing. "We find tunes that I could stretch out on," said Wein. "And when Lew Tabackin says, 'You're playing better than you've ever played in your life,' it made me feel good." Cohen says the All Stars are "preserving the tradition of jazz" by playing Wein's favorite swing standards such as "Take the 'A' Train" and "Johnny Come Lately" performed by Duke Ellington's big band. But she says the pianist gives his musicians enough space "to really do their own thing" with the material. Cohen says the All Stars give audiences a chance to see a whole different side of Wein. "People know George as a producer, thinker and entrepreneur," said Cohen. "And then there's the side of the little boy that plays piano. Every morning was so stressful! I created a chart on my computer. I put a picture for every task that she needed to complete in the morning. I had pictures of clothing for getting dressed, a pic of food, toothbrush, shoes, etc. I laminated the chart and put it on the fridge. I printed out little smiley faces and put velcro strips on the smiley's and the chart. With every task she completes in the morning, she gets to put a smiley next to the corresponding picture. If she gets all her smiley's, she gets marbles in her marble jar. We started with two jars of marbles one full, one empty. As she earns her marble from getting smiley's, the empty jar fills up. The idea is to give children choices and explain what you are going to do instead of telling the children what to do. For example telling the children "The car is leaving in 15 minutes, you can leave with your clothes on your body or with your clothes in a bag. You decide." The important thing is to follow through and plan ahead. You know this is an ongoing issue with your children. Call the preschool ahead of time and tell them that your children may come to school with their pajamas still on. Currently we have a penny game. Whenever they do something cooperatively the first time we ask (like "Let's get on our coats now" or "Come to the sink to brush your teeth") they get a penny in their cups. When we ask them twice they don't get anything, but they know they lost an opportunity. (We say "Oops, I had to tell you twice!) When we have to tell them a 3rd time, they lose a penny. (We are trying to do this without threats just by letting them learn from consequences. And we try to keep it upbeat and fun.) It has really helped them cooperate and has cut down on yelling/threatening and made the atmosphere here more positive! When they get 25 pennies we'll match it and do it again until they have at least a dollar to buy something at the store. This is working well for my 4 year old, but I have to adjust it for my 2 year old. I also remind her that if she is not ready when the time runs out, i will have to get her dressed and ready to go myself. After about three minutes, if she has not started, I remind her that she now has 'this much time' (showing her a smaller bit of air between my finger and thumb). She resisted the first week, and many days i had to hold her still to get her pants and shirt on, with her feet kicking me as i tried to get socks and boots on, but eventually i could see that she was doing it herself, albeit in her own time frame too. I have learned to see things with more paitience, through her eyes in terms of time. Now I plan for plenty of time before I have to go and the routine is a no tears event. And she feels great because she did it all by herself!I find what works best with my daughter (who is currently 3.5 years but I discovered this when she had just turned 3) is to talk about how incredibly fun and awesome the place that we are going to is going to be.
