"Thanksgiving, it's about being thankful and food, so we came to the race to eat the turkeys, and you know we don't see a lot of cutlery, so we figured we'd be the cutlery," said runner Meredith Maher, wearing a cut out knife on her back. "It was interesting, a little balancing act, and trying to make sure it doesn't flop off my head," said Ashley Gibson, describing her run with her dinner table costume. "We have a huge waiting list for services, agency wide we have about 4,500 people on the waiting list, we serve over 6,500, but you can see that there is still a huge need for seniors to stay independent, stay in their own homes," explained Seniors First CEO and President Marsha Lorenz. After crossing the finish line, runners could pick up a banana, or even a bagel, but the real prize would be later with their Thanksgiving Day feast. "You know, I'm feeling like I can eat whatever I want to right now, so yeah," said Daniel Thompson, who finished in 7th place. "I have guilt free eating the rest of the day," said Steve Parrish. NY1's Adam Balkin filed the following report. Add rings to the growing list of items that can now have a lower case "i" attached to them. Developers say it creates different patterns of dots that are recognized by your mobile device's camera, which can then turn the images into midi signals. What that, then, allows you to do is control certain parts of certain applications with gestures. The iRing costs $25 and comes with two rings. At the moment, it works with four apps including iRing Music Maker, iRing FX/Controller, GrooveMaker 2 and DJ Rig all of which are free downloads with available in app purchases out on iOS devices. Sticking with the music theme, here's another one of those runners like Subway Surfer or Temple Run. This one, though Record Run is from Harmonix, the same developers responsible for the once must have party game Rock Band, rival to Guitar Hero. In Record Run, you swipe up, down, left and right to jump, duck, and dodge obstacles. Two main things though that make this one different from other runners: first, you have to jump, duck, or dodge on the beat, and second, that music you're running to is music from your device's playlist. The game lets you choose your own music to run to and then the board will be setup to coincide with its rhythm. There are some things to note here, though. You will have to earn or in app purchase slots in your playlist for your own songs; plus, those songs must be Digital Rights Management free. I hired a broker to be the branch manager of that location. That broker taught me much about commercial business over the next six months. The first thing he taught me was retail and he started with shoe stores. He told me that the best place for a shoe store was next door to another shoe store. That did not make any sense to me to have competing stores next door to each other. However, when I began really looking at our retail areas, I saw that it was true. Much of the time though, you will leave the house without having decided on a place to go and just go to the same area every time, your favorite restaurant row. So, just like shoe stores, restaurants tend to cluster together. I"ll never forget when I was teaching realtors how to market retail properties. I was instructing a class in Atlanta, Georgia, which I did many times over seven or eight years, two or three times a year. After a while, we figured out that we could get some input from the retail community. One of the things we did was to ask McDonald"s real estate manager for the Southeastern United States to come visit our class. He explained how McDonald"s went through the process of selecting sites in the cities in the Southeast. He would show up with 2 or 3 assistants, people who were actually going out in the field and looking for sites. He had seven site selectors in his office, and they"d bring another couple of store managers and each of those store managers had a couple of people with them. So, they had this entourage of people showing up in our class carrying big muffins and coffee that we had during our break. The vice president of real estate would stand up and give us an hour of lecture with slides on demographics of how they picked the traffic counts, and all the rest of it. My students loved learning this scientific way to select a site. Then one day, I had the idea that I should probably invite the Burger King guy, too. He was also in Atlanta, and he covered exactly the same territories, in the same seven states. Burger King accepted the invitation, and their organization came down for the special purpose of giving their side of the story, knowing full well that the McDonald's guy was doing the class, too. So, I had McDonald's guy come on Tuesday, while Burger King came on Wednesday. The Burger King guy shows up with no helpers, but with two huge bags of sausage biscuits, we had to fend for ourselves to get coffee. He came by himself, because he had no assistants or site selectors working for him. He covered his seven states all by himself. He selected every site, wrote every contract, and did all the research himself. He had no big research facility and he did not pay much attention to demographics. Although his talk took about 45 minutes, it boiled down to this, "I go in to Greenville, South Carolina, and look around for McDonald's. Then, I'd buy whatever is closest to them. That was 15 years ago, but that is still their strategy today. They go and look for McDonald's. So, to recap that lesson: if you are filling up a little strip center, tenant mix is an important thing. If it is empty, one of your first concerns is to determine what business is going to anchor the center. There is a special word for that in retail real estate, a strip center's anchor is called the end cap. Now, there are two ends to this building. That is why it is so important to pick the business at the end of the strip that will bring the most traffic into the strip and then build your tenant mix. In 1989, Stew Spence became a full time real estate investor, and has bought, sold or been on the business end of hundreds of real estate transactions, both large and small, numerous diverse types of transactions totaling over $40,000,000. Meantime, I going to zero in on the issue that to me is getting lost in the furor over the fur business and the animal rights protesters: Morgan County, you suffered a loss of free speech, at the hands of one of your own governing bodies. It now illegal to go within 1,000 feet of a private residence to protest anything in Morgan. Most locals probably support the fur industry and the people who live in Morgan and run the businesses. They probably outraged by the animal rights protesters who are planning protests. But it also probable, in that environment, that they forgetting the constitutional guarantees of right to freedom of speech and of assembly. If a porn movie lord moved to Morgan and somehow managed to set up adult video stores, strip clubs and the like, how fast would the locals demand to exercise their rights to protest, up close? Right away, of course, because that America. Or it should be. But by cordoning off protesters safe distance from the mink business owners, Morgan officials have committed a reprehensible restriction of free speech and deftly shot themselves in the big toe by calling even more attention to the mink operations and the animal rights protest movement. Now, they can expect much more attention to be drawn to the Morgan mink industry all the way until the planned November protests. And Morgan County has succeeded in garnering publicity for the protesters beyond their wildest dreams, I suspect. Let think of how they might have handled it. Morgan had protest regulations already on the books. When informed the mink protesters were coming, suppose the Morgan officials had simply, and politely, told them what the existing regulations were, said they expected the protesters to stay within them, and offered the help of the city government and law enforcement in seeing that the protest came off without problems for anyone concerned. On the day of the protest, law enforcement would be there [addressing any protester they had to address, as "Sir" or "Ma'm" of course]. They would monitor the event quietly, from a short distance off to make sure the rules were complied with. Maybe help with traffic control if it became necessary. Had that happened, the protest might have generated a little news. Maybe a story in the SE back with the girdle ads. Not much else. Or the protesters could have brazenly violated the regs, and gotten themselves arrested creating large scale public antipathy for them, I suspect [more than would otherwise exist], and corresponding sympathy for the mink killers. That all Morgan officials had to do to maintain their own constituents free speech liberties and to deal with the matter. Sadly, they did not possess the wisdom to do the right thing. Instead, they made it plain that in their view, free speech liberties should be freely exercised in Morgan only by people with whom they agree. Special regulations apply to all others. Constitution, including the first ten amendments to it [aka the Bill of Rights]. They seem to have misplaced theirs. Sadly, no, it not new and sadly, no, it not uncommon. It should be. I unhappy with the very idea of speech zones being established at national political conventions or anywhere else. Usually means a fenced off area far from where any of the protest can be seen by any of the convention goers. I pretty old fashioned about stuff like this. Back when I was growing up, I was more or less taught that the entire nation was a free speech zone, and that under very limited circumstances, and for very compelling reasons, and for very short times, a limit on free speech might be justified. Preventing a president or convention delegate the possible discomfort of seeing a protest in progress, or preventing news cameras from picking up the action, don come within light years of meeting any of those standards. Where does free speech end and harassment begin? Does following someone home to yell at them qualify as free speech or harassment? If it me in my home, I say it harassment! (Imagine if the mink farmers followed the vegans home and protested them over the use of oil for their pleather shoes and fake wool jackets!) There are plenty of ways to get your point across but people have a right to live peacefully in their homes. The protesters have all the public areas of Morgan and the Internet and via the media to get their point of view out there. The ordinance passed in Morgan has stood up in courts all over the country so, yes, I think the town of Morgan did the right thing.
