Because of the weather, summer is perfect for any outdoor gathering. If you want to draw in a large crowd, summer weekends are the best time of year to host car events. Successful car events are ones that are planned ahead of time. Making plans for a good car show will make your car show look more professional. Here are some theme ideas to consider during the planning stages. 1.) Look to the past car shows for ideas. If recent car shows have been done in your area, do not repeat their theme. A theme, such as car hops, may be a good idea but only if it has not been done for a while. 2.) Think about specific vehicle inspired themes. You can hold a car show featuring a specific vehicle or vehicle type. Some popular choices would be mustangs or corvettes. 3.) Decade parties are always fun. Have a classic car show by restoring cars from the car hop decade of the 50's. Enjoy rock n roll music, car hop food, and sock hop dancing to bring in customers. 4.) Muscle cars from the 1960s are another good choice. Muscle cars from the mid 60's and 70's, were large, powerful vehicles. Take advantage of the theme and wear muscle shirts, and have muscle themed activities, such as arm wrestling. Be sure to have good prizes. 5.) Another fun decade was the roaring 20's. Have an antique car show! Have employees wear early 20's attire, and have barbershop quartets sing for entertainment. 6.) Host a unique vehicle car show. Have a car show based off of various miscellaneous vehicles. The more rare the vehicle, the better. If you have some old tennies, slippers, boots, sandals or other pairs of shoes lying around the house, in your closet or in the garage now is the time to make use of them, again! If your shoes are in too bad of shape to hand down, make them into stepping stones for your garden, landscaping, yard or lawn. This fun outdoor project of recycling your old tennies into stepping stones will not only look unique but has the potential to add character and personality. First you'll want to gather all your old shoes around the house. Ask family members if they have any lying around the house that they don't wear anymore. Another great place to look is garage sales. When choosing shoes from garage sales look for shoes that are somewhat even and smoother than others. For example, tennies would be better than cleats. You don't want people tripping over your stepping stones so the flatter the surface the better. Once you have all the shoes you'll need to make your stepping stones you'll want to cut the tops of the shoes off with a scissors or durable utility knife. They already look like true stepping stones don't they? Once you have them all cut, wash the bottom of the soles off with soap and water, making sure to rinse well so that suds don't dry on the surface. Now let the shoes dry for a day or so just to make sure they will not trap any moisture in when painting them. Now that you have your cut, clean and dry stepping stones it's time to give them some color . I used spray paint but you can use whatever source of paint you want. Just make sure it's durable for outside use so your stepping stones won't loose their color. This is where you might want a pair of gloves on in case you spray paint. Hold your shoes upright with one hand and spray the color on. Another way you can do this is by lying them on a peace of plywood or other flat surface you don't mind paint getting on. Follow the recommended dry times on the can before applying another coat and then clear coat. Next, stake down your stepping stones with anchor stakes you can find at your local hardware store. If you use two anchor stakes per stepping stone you'll want to poke through both ends before staking to the ground. Once you have the anchor stakes poked through the stepping stones, step them into the ground making sure that the surface of each stepping stone is flush with the ground. The best places to stake down your stepping stones would be in the grass, dirt, garden, wood chips or pea rock. Now you have a unique path of stepping stones that you can say you created with your own hands. These homemade stepping stones will add a touch of your personality and whatever else you want to your landscaping. Creating your own stepping stones can also make a great project with your kids. Baby and small kids' shoes add a cute touch to your stepping stones path. Create a story with these stepping stones you make out of your family's old shoes. One of the few bricks not in Royce White's wall of talent is free throw shooting, where "bricks" is an operative word. White has made just 94 of 192 foul shots for 49 percent. And he's on a roll, having made all three of his attempts in Iowa State's most recent game, a Big 12 tourney loss to Texas. Freshman center Andre Drummond, a 6 foot 10 player viewed as a possible NBA lottery pick this year should he choose to leave school, has made 26 of 88 free throws for an icy 29.5 percent. He was 1 of 8 in last week's Big East tournament. Iowa State, however, would be happy if Drummond skipped off to the NBA before Thursday night's UConn ISU NCAA tournament game here. Drummond averages 10.2 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots. He averages 3.5 offensive rebounds per game. He had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Huskies in their 58 55 Big East quarterfinal loss to second ranked Syracuse last Thursday. Drummond didn't sound too modest Wednesday when it came to discussing the matchup with the 6 8, 270 pound White and Iowa State. Asked about matchup problems with the slick dribbling and passing of White, Drummond said "I feel like it creates a matchup problem for Iowa State. We have Alex (6 foot 9 Alex Oriakhi) and myself in the post and they don't have any bigs above 6 9. Me and Alex are going to do our thing. "We're bigger, we're quicker as a collective group. We just have to run the ball down the court, get it in the post, and finish." Like a true coach, UConn's Jim Calhoun took a more fawning approach when the subject was his opponent. "We don't have anybody who plays like (White), obviously," Calhoun said. "He's a heck of a basketball player. I was talking to a pro scout today who's seen him four or five times and just said he's got some (Kevin) McHale stuff inside. Right now I wouldn't consider him a great shooter outside, but he just does things to help his team win. "You can't simulate him. I'll guarantee you Fred (Hoiberg) doesn't have another one, and nobody else has the same kinds of plays. . We can see the kids that can shoot. We've seen the kids that can post up. But he's a unique basketball player." Nike Roshe Run Woven Women New Green White,is known for making shoes that promote speed and efficiency. The Newton website advertises it as "the lightest and most efficient Natural Running shoe ever produced." It's certainly the lightest I've ever tried. When Newton first sent me a pair of MV2s to wear test I was a little nervous. Like most shoes, they come with instructions. Like most runners, I never follow them. Newton shoes have a relatively low heel to toe drop, which can put more stress on your calves and Achilles. For this reason, Newton always encourages runners to slowly adapt to the shoes, starting with no more than a mile or two max. I'm usually in a rush, testing out multiple shoes per week, so I often go out and put six to ten miles on them my first time out. Not a good idea. My calves always pay the price. The MV2 is Newton's first zero pitch shoe. In other words, they're completely flat, with no heel to toe drop. This requires your calf muscles to work even harder, but is also meant to encourage a more natural/barefoot style of running. Because I've never run in a zero drop shoe before, I wanted to make sure I enjoyed the experience and didn't get injured, so for the first time I followed the directions. The MV2 s come with a temporary 3mm heel lift for natural running newbies like me. The lift sticks to the heel just under the sock liner, and can easily be removed. For the first two weeks, I used the heel lift, and I never ran more than a mile in the shoes. I slowly worked up to 3 miles, and eventually removed the lift. I had absolutely no calf pain, a good sign for me and the MV2s. Like all Newton shoes, the MV2s have the brand's signature external actuator lugs. The lugs are meant to absorb impact and then return the energy helping to propel you forward. The first time you run in Newtons the lugs can feel like you've got a deck of cards stuck to the bottom of your forefoot. One thing that's nice about the MV2 is the new configuration of the lugs. While previous Newton shoes had four lugs, the MV2s have five, giving the shoes a more stable feel. The two outside lugs are a little bit wider and oval shaped instead of rectangular. The three inner lugs are slightly narrower than before. And, the lugs on the MV2 are only located under the forefoot. I found them much easier to get used to. In fact, I felt comfortable running in them right away. The sole of the MV2 is 16.5 mm and extremely flexible. The lugs and the foam provide more cushioning than most minimalist shoes, but they weren't meant to be worn for long distances or daily pounding. They're more like a racing flat. The upper is a microscreen mesh, making it super breathable and light. There's no added structure to the upper other than a reinforced heel. The MV2s run smaller than other Newtons, so you may need to size up a half. They're also narrow, so be sure to try before you buy if you have a wide forefoot. Overall, I really liked the MV2. In fact, it's my favorite Newton yet. It's lightweight, form fitting and fast an ideal shoe for speedwork and racing 5 to 10ks, or half marathons if you're extremely efficient.
