First, the dancer's toenail must be appropriately clipped. If a dancer's nails are too long it will affect the way the shoes feel and put unnecessary pressure on the big toe. When this is an issue, many dancers, especially first time pointe shoe wearers, will think that they are feeling too much pressure on the big toe and all shoes will hurt. Next, it is important that the dancer understand the difference between "uncomfortable" and "painful." I always tell the dancers that pointe is "uncomfortable." I explain that pointe shoes must be broken in first and that, in general, pointe shoes are not meant to be comfortable. However, "painful" is not something we want. Many first pointe dancers don't really understand this concept until they have worn pointe shoes for a year or two, but I find it helps to explain it up front. Also, it is important for parents to understand that pointe shoes must not be fit with growing room. Pointe shoes are meant to fit the foot exactly. If the back of the box is pulling off of the floor then a stronger shank in probably in order. I always like to find three or four different pointe shoe styles that I call "possibilities." Then, once the dancer has tried on many different styles of shoes and has a better idea of what pointe shoes should feel like, I ask them to try on all of the "possibilities" one by one.
