Waste Management will offer reduced residential rates and free dumping for some items at its downtown and Stead transfer stations Saturday and Sunday. Large appliances and furnishings often dumped illegally in the surrounding hills will be accepted at no charge, including freon free refrigerators, hot water heaters, stoves, dishwashers, washers/dryers, sofas, chairs, mattresses and box springs. Residents will pay 50 percent of the regular rate for all other items. Electronic waste will not be accepted at this event, and hazardous wastes are not accepted at any time. Residential Dump Days is the result of a partnership between Waste Management and Washoe County to help residents clean up their homes and communities and reduce illegal dumping. "Enhancing the program to include a reduced rate is our way of helping our customers in these tough economic times," said Justin Caporusso, Waste Management spokesman. He provided an example when the Jaguars declined to bid for quarterback Alex Smith, who was traded this week to Kansas City. For the Jaguars, the immediate focus of free agency free agents can begin negotiating with other teams March 9 and sign deals March 12 is determining how many of their 13 unrestricted free agents they want to keep. It appears likely that they will lose starting cornerback Derek Cox and linebacker Daryl Smith, the team's all time leading tackler. Cox has missed 17 games the past three years with injuries. Smith played in only the final two games of the 2012 season because of a groin injury, and he turns 31 later this month. Cox's agent, David Sullivan, said last week he expects a vigorous market for Cox. And the New York Giants, who are looking for linebackers, could be a new home for Smith. Paying big money to your own players whose contracts are expiring doesn't always pay big dividends. The Jaguars gave Marcedes Lewis a five year, $35 million deal in 2011 after he caught 10 TD passes in 2010. He has caught four touchdowns the last two years. And they gave defensive end Jeremy Mincey a four year, $20 million deal in 2012 after he had eight sacks in 2011. He dropped to three last year. Mosley. The Jaguars also have six restricted free agents. If the Jaguars make them a tender offer, they will likely stay because most teams aren't willing to part with draft picks as compensation. The Jaguars have two exclusive rights free agents, defensive end John Chick and running back Keith Toston. The Jaguars can keep them simply by making the minimum offer. CB Derek Cox: The Jaguars would like to keep him, but only at the right price. The team is wary of his injury history. Cox will probably get a better offer and appears unlikely to stay. LB Daryl Smith: Missed virtually the entire 2012 entire season with a groin injury. Solid performer since the Jaguars drafted him. Another who is likely to get a better offer. Mosley, who will be paid $2.4 million in 2013. The Jaguars don't figure to pay Knighton more than the player who beat him out, meaning Knighton may get a better offer somewhere else. C Brad Meester: Wants to return for a 14th season and the Jaguars have to decide how much he has left in the tank. He made $2.9 million last year and might be willing to take less on a one year deal to stay for another season. FB Greg Jones: One of the best blocking fullbacks in the league, but the position isn't a high priority. Still, if he's willing to take less than the $3.4 million he made last year, the Jaguars could sign him to a one year deal. T Eben Britton: Fell out of favor with the previous coaching staff and was benched twice after being switched from tackle to guard. Former second round pick is not likely to command much money on the market so the Jaguars have to decide if they want to try to salvage his career. RB Rashad Jennings: Has been plagued with injuries and was a disappointment last season after Maurice Jones Drew went out with a broken foot. The Jaguars may figure he is no longer in their plans. CB Rashean Mathis: Started only four games after coming back from an ACL injury last year and at age 32 may not fit into a rebuilding program. His one year deal last year was for $2.2 million plus incentives. CB William Middleton: Backup defensive back made $1.2 million last year and started three games. Jaguars have to decide if he's worth returning as a corner and special teams player. CB Antwaun Molden: Played in only three games after being signed in late November. He had a $700,000 pro rated contract last year, was inactive the last two games and may not be in their plans. QB Jordan Palmer: Cut at the end of training camp last year, then re signed in late November after Blaine Gabbert was injured. Has played in only four games in his career. Jaguars may not extend an offer. RB Jalen Parmele: Played in 11 games, and started two, then went out with an injury. He earned $615,000 last season and the Jaguars may choose to bring him to camp as a minimum wage player. C/G Steve Vallos: Veteran journeyman was signed in November, played in four games and started the season finale when Uche Nwaneri was injured. He was a $700,000 minimum wage player on a pro rated deal. Nike Kobe 9 Low EM XDR White Black Gold,Country kids get a leg up on their city counterparts when it comes to learning the basics of life. It one thing to read about "Old McDonald" and yet another to put on your old shoes and clean out his chicken coop. Even when you in single digits seven, eight or nine you begin to suspect there more than a passing resemblance of animal behavior to that of the human race. Moms and Pops have it easier when it comes time for the most dreaded of all conversations. City talk has pretty much been scripted through the years but nonetheless more difficult to recite than the preamble to the constitution, "Well, now you see, Johnny, there are birds, and there are bees, or, ah, bees and birds, and ah, and ah ." With country parents it pretty much, "Do you remember when we brought Harvey the bull, down to meet Bessie, the cow ." My sisters and I were "hybrids" to use a word now applied to cars, and words to a song, "I a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll." We lived on several acres, with a large garden, dogs, cats, a horse and barnyard animals, only a few miles from town. As a kid there weren many things I enjoyed more than playing baseball unless it was not shelling peas or digging potatoes. I probably had the best baseball glove a JC Higgins Classic that I slept with in the neighborhood and for sure the best backstop. The chicken pen meandered around several trees and provided forty feet of fence sufficient to stop errant balls, except for occasional foul tips. Pop was a strict disciplinarian and the quintessential Irishman smart, exacting, sandy red hair, blue eyes, quick temper, and appreciation for the manly sport of fisticuffs. To my knowledge Pop didn imbibe, but what he lacked in the fine art of tippling was amply filled by his father. My respect for Pop was only surpassed by my fear of angering him. He seemed more attached to the chickens than most of the other animals. Perhaps it was because there were more of them and he was especially fond of eggs and fried chicken. But neither did they require as much care; just throw out some hen scratch, fill up the water trough, and gather the eggs. What I didn understand was the presence of the meanest rooster ever in captivity. He was the missing page in my "Birds and Bees" tutorial. On this day we had gathered enough players for a softball game; my sisters and a few other neighborhood kids. Early in the game a foul tip carried the ball over the fence and into the chicken pen. Generally with a little stretching and help from a bat you could retrieve the ball, but not this time. Not a soul living or dead who had ever witnessed the territorial ferocity of the rooster would want any part of going into that pen. But I wanted to play ball. I gathered up my courage, greatly enhanced by the bat in my hand, and waited for the right moment. At a time when the chickens and rooster were in the coop resting or whatever they did I tiptoed into the pen and made a dash for the ball. I had just picked it up when a blast of feathers, spurs and fury came tearing around the corner. Out of sheer reflex and mortal fear I swung the bat and hit the rooster flush on the head. He dropped in his tracks and lay still, dead still. The entire group of ragtag ball players stood, fingers numbed from clutching the fence, and stared in disbelief. I had killed Pop favorite barnyard animal. I bent to take a closer look and the reality of life, then death, hit me. I, too, was as good as dead. A shaky voice from outside the fence suggested I pour water on the heap of feathers in hopes the old rooster was still clinging to life. It was later that I assumed it was God or Oral Roberts. I doused his head, punched the body lightly once or twice, and wearily left the pen. I rejoined the group standing somberly outside the fence wondering what to do next. Aside from running away, what could I do? Someone suggested we say a prayer, and like a ten year old teetering on a gallows, I readily agreed. There in the heat of a hot Texas afternoon five or six kids said a silent prayer for the meanest and most worthless living thing you could ever imagine. As we watched and hoped, in a matter of seconds the old rooster began to twitch and move, slowly and haltingly, then more. Finally he stood, though uneasily, shook his once proud head and wobbled slowly back to the safety of his perch and feathered harem. We looked at each other and cheered. The old rooster was never as imposing or ferocious after this encounter. I don know how he was in the romance department. Funny thing, I don think Pop ever knew, but the hens probably did John L.
