But the Kolkata boy did not even consider studying in his hometown. He says he chose to leave Kolkata the day he decided to study science. "Barring a few good colleges, Kolkata hasn't got anything right in terms of an undergraduate engineering course neither a conducive environment nor campus placement. In Bangalore, I am in the country's software capital. My chances of landing a job here are obviously higher," says Utsav, who doesn't plan to return to Kolkata in the near future. The budding engineer is part of a growing tribe of students who have lost faith in Kolkata and prefer to chase their dreams in other cities that have kept up with the times. The reasons they list are many but none too surprising. Too much politics on campus and very few colleges of repute, violence, poor environment, inadequate infrastructure and above all, the lack of job opportunities, have led to the Great Migration of students from Bengal. It started just over a decade ago and has gained momentum with each passing year. Thousands of students from the city pack their bags and shift to campuses in Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai every year. Even the mushrooming of private engineering colleges across Bengal couldn't stem the tide. According to a study conducted by Sebak Jana, a Vidyasagar University teacher, 18% 20% of students passing Class XII in Bengal prefer undergraduate courses in other states. A quarter of all Class XII passouts in Kolkata move out, and this figure has been growing by a phenomenal 5 6% every year. It's not just the quality of courses which prompts them to make the move. They are lured by the wider choice of disciplines and a vibrant job market in other cities, say students and educationists. Take Akash Sharma, for instance. The 19 year old former La Martiniere student moved to Symbiosis Institute in Pune last year to study mass communication with a film making. "Compared to Symbiosis, the Kolkata courses are archaic. More importantly, Pune gives me better access to job markets in Mumbai and Pune. Kolkata is pretty much behind the rest of the country in terms of professional courses," says Akash. "Other states have successfully projected the notion that their campuses are run more professionally and their courses give students a better chance in the job market. While this is true to a large extent, our colleges and universities are qualitatively no inferior to them. In terms of numbers, however, Bengal lags behind. There are fewer good colleges here. So, those who can afford to bear the expenses of studying in a different city, no longer settle for a second rung college in Kolkata," said Achin Chakrabarty, director of the Institute of Development Studies, Kolkata. Other than IIT Kharagpur, IIM Calcutta and a couple of other institutes, no other institution in the state has round the clock library or internet facilities. Vidyasagar University economics teacher Sebak Jana, who has written a book on the quality of higher education in Bengal, says that the state fares among the worst in terms of student facilities. "Any ordinary institute in Pune or Bangalore provides internet access to every student. Libraries are open round the clock. Bengal, sadly, hasn't moved from the chalk and talk format," said Jana. Shrivar, a student from Kolkata, explains why he had no hesitation in taking up an engineering course in RV College, Bangalore, two years ago: "We have wi fi facility on campus and I can walk into the library in the middle of the night. What more could I ask for? Almost all my batchmates have migrated to Bangalore. No one even considered Kolkata as an option." There is a lack of good colleges in Kolkata even for conventional courses, says ISC third ranker Varun Garg, who is moving to Delhi's Shri Ram College of Commerce. "I might get into St. Xavier's College, but I prefer Delhi. The study environment is more vibrant in the Capital," he says. "We have lost out in the competition. Colleges in other cities moved up ahead of us and we are merely playing catch up, which is not good enough to hold students back," said Haren Bhattacharya of Presidency University. "Other cities have more institutes, more courses and better research facilities. The sheer choice that they offer students is too good to resist. Kolkata pales in comparison. Not enough good colleges have been set up in Bengal." The gulf between the few good institutes that still survive and the rest is a huge one, says Naveen Saraff, a former IIM Bangalore student who runs a coaching centre in Kolkata. "It could be frustrating if you can't get into Presidency, Jadavpur University or St. Xavier's. Barring these three, the rest don't match up to students' expectations any longer. Perhaps the real reason is that Bengal doesn't have a vibrant job market," said Saraff. Jana agrees. Not everyone graduating from Bangalore or Pune lands a lucrative job, he pointed out. "But there are more jobs on offer for the average student. Kolkata has nothing for them. The migration won't stop unless we can improve employment opportunities," he said.
