Some are married, others have children, and nearly all of them work on campuses in the Redlands Unified School District. These "running goddesses," as member Ruth Sotomayor calls them, will leave their families behind Friday and have a girls weekend in San Francisco when they run 13.1 miles in the 2009 Nike Women's Marathon on Sunday. "No significant others. No kids. Just the girls," said Jeannie Noriega, language arts teacher at Moore Middle School. The event is called a "race," but not to this group. They each wear a T shirt that reads "I run because I can" on the front and "the woman who started this race is not the same woman who'll finish it." "We're not very competitive," Sotomayor said. "We're encouraging." The group meets for breakfast and coffee after some of their runs and sometimes for dinner, she said. "It's just kind of a running community that stays connected," Moore principal Julie Swan said. The team was assembled in 2008 by Moore English teacher Denise Freeman. After her stepfather died of pancreatic cancer, Freeman looked to support any research organization by walking or running. "At the same time I was looking to do a walk or a run was when I got the flyer for Team In Training," she said. The Leukemia Lymphoma Society's Team In Training helps participants get ready to run or bike in marathons and triathlons around the world. In turn, program participants raise money for the society's research and a portion of the earnings go to their race expenses. Freeman joined Team in Training in 2002 and configured an independent group of 16 in 2008. "We had so much fun and talked about it so much that our group grew this year," Noriega said. This year's group of 31 includes female friends and staff members from Moore, Redlands East Valley High School and Arroyo Verde Elementary School. Running in a group is fun and "it keeps you motivated to keep your running schedule," Sotomayor said. "When you don't feel like running, you have people to encourage you to run." They run year round, but increase their mileage in July, Noriega said. "We try to keep base mileage at eight," she said. Some members were frequent runners before joining, while others are beginners. The entire pack usually meets Saturdays at Coffee Bean Tea Leaf for a group run and they break into smaller running groups during the week depending on schedules, Noriega said. Sundays half marathon will start at Union Square and end near the coast. Nike holds this race specifically for women, and each finisher receives a necklace from Tiffany and Co., Noriega said. Firefighters hand out the necklaces at the finish line, she said, and massages, pedicures and food are available before and after the race. Despite the initial impression that this suede might be a bit too light for shoe duty, the upper shows almost no signs of wear. All in all, this shoe performs better than one would expect and it does so while looking sharp and being super comfortable. The Unilite Trainer is the sportier of the two shoes in this review, and they have become my go to shoe for long walks and day long duty of stomping around San Francisco. The revolutionary no sew technology of the synthetic mesh upper has proven itself as a worthy adversary of whatever the world throws at it, and the overall lack of seams means that the shoe is comfortable right out of the box. This purpose built, particularly futuristic looking shoe provides maximum cushioning and a very grippy sole, and it's as at home in the gym as it is in the urban jungle. Pretty fantastic stuff for a company that, at one time, pretty much only made skateboard shoes. The OTH Pool and Unilite Trainer show that DC is willing to experiment and branch out in order to stay relevant and viable, and they are doing a bang up job of it. The retro styling of the OTH Pool is directly connected to origins of skateboarding, while the Unilite Trainer feels like something from the future.
