Bill Mikolay once sold a submarine propeller, but struggled to find a buyer for Disneyland monorail parts. When he got busy, he tossed Catholic manuscripts from 1593 in his desk drawer because a call to the Vatican didn't help figure out who owned them. His downtown store, which displays just 3 percent of an ever changing inventory, offers Starbucks coffees, Nike sports gear, one Hermes purse discounted down from $38,000 and barrels of 10 cent taco mix. If he could sell any of those things or a shipment of 10,000 Halloween shrunken head decorations he'd be happy for a minute, then on to the next sale. "Any time you get in shrunken heads, it's too many," Mikolay said on a tour of a warehouse he uses for Main Street Discount and his eBay operation, the Freight Adoption Agency. In the past six months, sales have doubled for Mikolay, who buys up bankrupt stores then sells their equipment shelves, mirrors and appliances and their products (lately from True Value, Macy's and Hooters). "It used to be, I'd wake up, start the coffee maker and run to the computer to check on sales," Mikolay said. He's still running, but not to the computer. His company now owns four trucks and posts 30,000 listings on eBay at a time. "I haven't got a full night's sleep in days," Mikolay said. He's often out at public auctions, where dying stores dump their wares. For lost freight, Mikolay buys from shipping companies that either damaged or temporarily misplaced cargo. After insurance companies pay a claim to the harmed company, the shippers get stuck with goods for which they have no means of getting to customers. They sell to Mikolay by the truckload. For bankruptcies, Mikolay acts as a liquidator. "Nobody really gets hurt on these," Mikolay said, explaining how companies get some money for the product they can't use, and his shoppers find bargains. "At first I thought I was capitalizing on other people's misery," he said. "But if I don't do it, somebody else will . pass on the advantage of lower prices to the people." Recent bankruptcies ranged from low value Dollar Store items to an entire chain of KP Fashions stores, which sold designer clothing in select cities like Los Angeles and Las Vegas. When buying a Hooters store, Mikolay got kitchen gear, alcohol, chairs and everything in the gift shop, but the company held on to its infamous Hooters uniforms. Mikolay probably could have fought the company for those, because he legally bought the entire store. But in the face of frequent theft allegations and claims by companies that their products can only be sold by them, Mikolay picks his fights and almost always wins. For example, one company sued Mikolay over machinery he was selling. After much ado and grandstanding, Mikolay said, the judge asked what his defense would be. "I held up a receipt," Mikolay said.
