To try and figure out which way the economy is headed, analysts keep an eye on traditional statistics like the Conference Board's Leading Economic Index, the Institute for Supply Management's Reports on Business, and the Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers. Based on the following Seattle Times editorial, "Economic Indicator: Garbage," maybe they should just follow their nose? The volume of Seattle's garbage tracks with the economy and the stock market. FOURTEEN months ago, former King County Executive Ron Sims made an odd statement. People were wondering if the economy was in a recession. Sims said he thought it was, because the volume of garbage was down, and that meant people were buying fewer new things and throwing away fewer old things. We had not thought of judging our city's prosperity by the weight of its discarded food wrappers, Styrofoam shapes, dryer lint and worn out shoes. Was Sims right? Could we really chart business conditions that way? The numbers support Sims' assertion. The volume of trash is down from a year ago. The plunge is not a result of recycling. "There is no way we have increased recycling that dramatically," says George Sidles, a Seattle Public Utilities area manager for recycling and solid waste. What happened in September? Lehman Brothers failed, WaMu was seized, and AIG was put on life support. In September, Wall Street stocks began a plunge that lasted until March. And in Seattle, the tonnage of unrecycled garbage began a plunge in October that stabilized in March and April, with volumes down 18 percent from the high of last summer. Sims was right. If you want to know how your community is doing, business wise, you can ask a representative group of business owners. Or one garbage collector. A callus is an area where dead skin has accumulated to form a thick, protective patch. Calluses develop on parts of your skin that are exposed to an unusual amount of pressure or friction on a regular basis and therefore need to be tougher than the rest of your skin. Calluses on the feet are common in people who walk around barefoot outdoors, wear shoes that pinch (in which case the calluses develop on the outside of the big and little toes), or wear open backed shoes (calluses develop under and around the heel). Some calluses on the balls of the feet are caused by shoes that are too loose: The callus develops when the foot consistently rides forward inside the shoe with each step. Other calluses develop on the balls of the feet or just behind the toes because the foot has a low or high arch. Calluses can begin to hurt if they become too thick. If you have a callus that hurts, try padding your shoe in the spot where the callus touches it with a callus pad or moleskin, which is available in most drugstores. Another solution is to use custom made orthotics (insoles) that will not only relieve the pressure on the painful callus but also redistribute the abnormal forces causing the callus. Ask your doctor about these. You can also try soaking your foot in warm water for about 20 minutes, then scrubbing the calloused area with a brush and applying softening cream; do this at least twice a week. (See the page of this article on Dry Skin and Foot Pain for some special foot softening recipes.) Do not, however, try to cut off a callus. In some situations, a callus is caused by something other than the usual wear and tear on your feet. Intractable plantar keratosis is very deep callus material that develops under the ball of the foot due to a problem with the metatarsal (foot) bone. This condition can be very painful. Treatment usually consists of padding, custom made insoles, and sometimes surgery to realign the metatarsal bone. Another common foot problem that can be caused by shoes are corns. Finkel, now lives in the Boston, Mass. metro area with his wife and three kids. He was running in this year's Boston Marathon and wasn't able to finish because of the attack that took place at the finish line. Now he's ready to run again. This time all 26.2 miles in Sunday's Buffalo Marathon. "[There's] wonderful support from the community. It's my hometown, so it's very comfortable and a lot of fun to run here as well," said Finkel, while wearing his blue Boston Marathon 2013 jacket. Finkel says he was 200 yards from the second explosion in Boston. He remembers police telling him to get away from the area. But, his family was waiting for him near the finish line and luckily they were out of harm's way. Finkel and his wife and kids were able to reach each other by cell phone and meet up nearby. Finkel says he's not worried at all about running this year's race. Between 6,000 and 7,000 runners from the region and around the world will be here. Security will be boosted for Sunday's race with federal agencies monitoring activity. There will be a Boston Marathon tribute that will include a moment of silence before the race. And all runners will be provided "Boston Strong" tattoos that they can wear with pride. Finekl says that finishing the race has a special meaning to him and that he's "fixated on that finish line and on that goal of crossing the finish line." He says that he will also be thinking of the victims and those who were injured in the Boston Marathon and that they have "become part of all of us." About 6,000 runners weren't able to finish Boston. But, those runners are being given the chance to run it again next year for free and without any registration requirements. Finkel says he'll be there again next year. Other runners who we've talked to say they'll pass on running in Boston next year. But others say they will make the trip again. The decision to run or not has become a very personal decision for each runner to make. Air Jordan 3 Joker Tonight Steven said, "every time I hear you sing I forget where I am.
