I am absolutely sure that each and every one of my fellow Bears is going to go forth and change the world in their own way. This type of culture tends to rub off on you. Experience all that Berkeley has to offer. The San Francisco Bay Area is probably the most progressive place on the planet. Be prepared for a truly eye opening experience. I think it impossible to spend an extended amount of time in Berkeley without changing as a person, for the better. Though it a relatively expensive option at around $6500 per semester for a tiny, shared room, you really can put a price on the experience. Six hundred similarly driven young people from all around the world living under the same roof is a recipe for endless discussion, learning and shenanigans. For many people, sharing a small room can be confronting. Flights, room and board at I House, and mandatory health insurance (if you don cough up the $900 for insurance at the start of the semester they will track you down and make you pay it later on, so you might as well just do it early) will set you back about $9000. If you planning on eating out, sight seeing, etc, you should budget accordingly. If you are studying biomedical science and/or considering postgraduate medicine, you should definitely take IB 137 (Human Endocrinology) with Prof Tyrone Hayes. This class is without a doubt the best that I have ever taken. You won regret it. Take as few units as possible, so you are able to actually get the full exchange experience instead of sitting in your room studying while everyone else is out having a good time. Classes at Berkeley aren easy, and the assessment is steady throughout the semester. To get 8 units of credit when you return to UQ, you need to take at least 15 units at Berkeley.
