Regular readers of this column know how much I like big black boots. These same readers also know how much I like Fluevogs. To some, these two passions, though both shoe related, seem incongruous. I say that they are merely two sides of the same coin. Within the very limited spectrum of what we know as menswear, shoes can fill a very important role. Here in San Francisco, where the mostly mild weather makes it possible to wear practically any kind of shoe all year, one has many shoe wearing options. Whether or not you can get away with wearing the same pair of shoes every day, it's just not a good idea to do so. That would be boring. Who likes boring? This is where a shoe like the Timberland Radler Trail Camp comes in. Meant for scuffing about, this shoe is perfect for a quick run to Whole Foods to get more shallots and Torrontes. The Radler Trail Camp is the quintessential occasional shoe. It is lightweight and extremely minimalist, yet still comfortable enough to wear for long ish periods of time. Think of it as an outdoor slipper. The upper of the shoe is made of durable water repellent ripstop nylon that is lined with micro fleece. The thin, but so far, durable felt like removable footbed, immediately conforms to the shape of your foot and is decent at taking the edge off of most surface irregularities you might encounter while padding your way to the laundromat in your sweatpants on a Sunday morning. Having spent a lot of my youth camping, I can see why a shoe like this would be appealing around the campsite. However, re purposed as a San Francisco slipper, I think this shoe makes even more sense. It is quirky, colorful, and convenient, and since it's made by Timberland, it is likely to last a good long time. Timberland has a big, beautiful store right in the middle of downtown San Francisco at 845 Market Street. You should go there and commune with the footwear. There's a good chance you'll find a shoe that's right for you. Tips for moving houseplants from outdoors to indoorsMany gardeners keep their houseplants outside during the summer and move them inside for the winter. Typically this is a good strategy but with moving plants in during the winter the plants. The star of the show was "Timeline," a fundamental re imagining of what the personal Facebook profile can be. acts as a virtual of your life, sorting and sifting through updates, photos, videos, activity, among other things, to create a representation of the individual and what the seminal moments in his or her life are. Scrolling backward, therefore, is seemingly endless and goes all the way to back to the person's date of birth. Facebook's other significant announcement at F8 revolved around its new "Open Graph" platform for a new class of applications, or "apps." and Netflix were featured, too, with their CEO's addressing the crowd about how their products will be integrated with Facebook's new redesign. Nike + was mentioned as well, for people who run often, and cooking apps were also showcased. The reasons were pretty clear. Music, movies, running and cooking. These are activities people enjoy and do often and they were featured to show how Facebook friends will be able to better share what they're doing with each other. These apps will also be integrated into a person's timeline. changes come at an interesting time for social networks. Twitter continues to grow and has, at times, created more buzz than Facebook. But Facebook continues to dwarf Twitter when it comes to number of users and engagement. Google launched its new social network, Google+, in June, to rave reviews from technology professionals and social media lovers, many of whom believe it provides an interesting approach to privacy and sharing. one of the knocks on Google+ has been that it is a "ghost town." Many wondered if Facebook would respond by co opting some of Google's features, remaining silent, or going in a different direction entirely. Facebook answered those questions in monumental fashion on Thursday, deciding that social media should be about more than showing aspects of the individual it should be about telling your life story. Nike Roshe Run Men Obsidian Volt,: Funk ify your shoes These super comfortable but boring sensible brown shoes were a (secondhand)gift.acetone (other instructibles do not recommend nail polish remover)cotton ballsleather paint I used Martha Stewart Crafts Multi Surface Satin in paint brush I used an old eyeshadow brushBased on the style of the shoe I decided to paint the toe and sides. I thought that blue would be an attractive compliment to the brown. The blue is surprisingly blue and I should have brought the shoes with me to pick the paint. There are specialty leather paints but they are expensive. I just wanted a splash of colour. This small bottle of paint from a large chain craft store cost less than $5.You need so little acetone to clean the leather in preparation for painting that I couldn justify the $15 expense. I borrowed a can of acetone from a friend and returned the can before taking the photo. In a well ventilated location, wipe the area of shoe that you want to paint with a cotton ball soaked with acetone .Initially I thought that I could free hand paint the shoes but I glad that I did use the masking tape a) because I didn have a good paint brush and b) even with the tape, the painting is tricky!Apply one coat. Let the paint dry thoroughly before painting the next coat. You may need another coat of paint.Carefully remove the masking tape.Despite checking that the tape was firmly and evenly adhered, the paint did creep a little. I painted a small item with COVA COLOR leather paint and actually had it go through the wash, and the paint did not crack, I was amazed. All purpose paints only work for flat, unmoving surfaces. Saving a few bucks is NOT worth it. Why not remove that paint and start over with leather paint? Use the clear coating recommended over it, too. You'll be amazed at the superior results. It would be a shame if people coming here thought that the cracked look was the best they could get: it so not! I'm 55 and have years of experience trying to save money with the wrong materials, paint and glue formulas are very specific and using the wrong one can ruin a project.

Ballet stretches taught properly help with muscle flexibility. Ballet exercises in soft shoes and pointe shoes all require the correct posture and alignments. Doing the splits for a jete or a penche does not come naturally to many dancers. So how do they make it look right? One of the biggest reliefs I had when I went from amateur to professional training was that hips do not have to be square in a derriere (behind you) position. Including doing the splits. system. I had natural turnout. It looked great except when I did a tendu (French word for stretched) derriere. We had to keep our hips square. In more advanced classes the developpe to the back, and attitude positions still looked terribly turned in. Naturally the students would go for height, which opened our hip. Our teacher would correct our hips, placing them back to a square position, and both the height and turnout looked miserable. When I got into classes taught by teachers from The National Ballet of Canada, I was elated to find I could open my working hip. The waist, upper back and shoulders had to stay square, but not the hips. I finally and instantly had a professional looking line in arabesque, attitude, etc. When I explained how I had been taught they said "no one can do that!" Another absurdity is that some people will never do the splits due to hip deformity. Doing the splits depends on overall hyper mobility. Not only hamstrings and quads need to be extremely flexible, but your postural muscles, the iliopsoas, needs to be very flexible. Hyper mobility of the joints is an extra blessing for doing the splits, but creates a lot of problems too. A professional ballet dancer will do whatever it takes to get a good line in a split jete or penche. Those who cannot do the splits perfectly open the hip more, and sometimes slightly bend the leg so that their foot lines up with the hip, and even though the entire leg is not lined up, the illusion of the splits is seen. The hard and fast rules of ballet technique are for safety for prevention of dance injuries. Getting the right line allows for accommodations that skilled teachers know how to teach. Stretch after your ballet exercises when you are warm. Relax your muscles first. Use a rubber ball to knead out the worst tension. Then stretch gently in correctly aligned positions. You will improve your muscle flexibility, and you may end up doing the splits. But if you never do, it is not going to kill a dance career. There's a method behind Metro's offer, with the switch to a new year being one of the deadliest days on the road, as Henry Grabar pointed out on the Atlantic Cities blog: New Year's Day is consistently one of the most dangerous days of the year for drivers. Not surprisingly, a unusually large percentage of car accidents tomorrow will involve alcohol in 2009, alcohol played a role in40 percent of fatal crashes, as opposed to 32 the rest of the year. And in Houston, drunk driving seems to be a bigger problem than other metro areas, according to some recent research.
