Boy Scouts: Reject sprawl for the kids

From The North Woods Call, Editorial Page

Mid May Issue, 2009

Anti sprawl LandChoices founder Kirt Manecke is setting a conservation landmark in his quest to save thousands of acres of Boy Scout-owned open space from pavement.

Manecke's research reveals there are at least a couple dozen, or so, Scout-owned properties in Michigan, ranging from about city lot size to hundreds of acres. Some lands have already been lost to sprawl as Scout officials opted for short term operating cash.

This, he points out, isn't good for the kids, their kids or their grandkids.

So Manecke is pressing to convince Scout leaders to place their lands under permanent conservation easements. That way they will forever enrich kids, Scouting and Nature.

It is a cause all conservationists should enlist in. To find out how go to www.landchoice.org/bigcamps.htm. Or call Manecke at 248-685-0483.
