Success Story! Saving 564-Acres in Proud Lake State Recreation Area Parcel is among sites Michigan DNR wanted to sell Success Story! Randy Ston, President, Save Our State Land, Union Lake, Michigan Thanks to our members, LandChoices has been instrumental in helping save 564-acres of wilderness in Proud Lake State Recreation Area in Commerce Township in southeast Michigan. In March 2007, Commerce Township officials reached a tentative lease agreement with the DNR to keep 564 acres of the recreation area in public hands. At the end of the 25-year lease period, the township would have the option of purchasing the land. The job to save this land is not complete yet, and LandChoices will continue to monitor the progress of the lease to Commerce Township and possible purchase to Oakland County Parks to make certain this land is preserved. LandChoices assisted the conservation group, Save Our State Land, in getting the word out to help save this beautiful 564-acre parcel of state land. With an interview on WWJ (Detroit) News Radio 950, and media placements about this issue in The Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, The Oakland Press and other publications, LandChoices helped spread the word to citizens who helped prevent this sale. The land is located on the north and south sides of Wise Road approximately a half-mile west of Union Lake Road in Commerce Township.
